Preparing your Home for the Fall Season

With summer coming to an end, now is an excellent time to perform a routine checkup to ensure that your Houston home is in top condition. Fall home maintenance is essential to ensure that your property is ready to withstand frosts, rain, and even snow as winter approaches. If you do not complete home maintenance early, you may have to repair more serious damage during the colder, harsher months.

These are the essential tasks to cross off your fall to-do list to ensure your Houston Apartment is refreshed and cared for during the coming season.

1. Deep clean the house

We frequently consider spring cleaning, but we forget that the fall season is also an excellent time for a thorough cleaning. Clean the windows, wipe down the skirting boards, and dust areas that are frequently overlooked, such as lampshades and the tops of cupboards and shelves. Begin with the living room and work your way through the rest of your Houston home. When you start working on the kitchen, don’t forget to clean the oven and the refrigerator.

2. Repair the lawn after the summer heat

The fall season is ideal for repairing your lawn after the summer heat and days spent in the sun.

‘Over the summer, soils became very hard, dry, and compacted, preventing moisture from penetrating and slowing recovery,’ says the report.

3. Prepare the Fireplace

If you’re planning on using your fireplace this autumn, line the area with newspaper and remove all loose ashes and dust with a shovel and broom. Then, use a wire brush to clean off the soot from the brick, and use baking soda and warm water on a sponge to clean the remaining soot and dust off.

4. Treat the Home for Pests

Since pests can seek cover when the outdoor conditions start to change, call a pest professional to make sure your home is readied to ward them off. As weather shifts, pests often seek homes for warmth and food. Getting ahead of any issues with pests is a smart move.

5. Improve your home security for darker days

The fall months often see an increase in break-ins as the nights get darker. Because of this, it is important to protect your home and consider upgrading your home security with some of the best home security systems.

6. Clear out gutters

Gutters are often overlooked, but it is critical to ensure that they are not blocked or clogged before the rainy season begins. Gutters can drain thousands of gallons of water from your roof each year (depending on where you live), and if they become clogged, you may suffer interior and exterior water damage.

When the leaves start to fall, make sure to empty and clean the gutters and drain pipes so that water can flow freely to the outside drains.
